On 13 December 2026, the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) completes the biggest overhaul in its history. HSK 3.0 will be administered officially worldwide from that date, following two rounds of global trials — the first on 31 January 2026 at selected test centres, the second on 20 September 2026 across the world. This is no longer a pilot.

      1. From six levels to three bands and nine levels

For two decades HSK has run from Level 1 to Level 6. Many learners stopped at Level 4 because there was simply nothing above it to measure against, leaving intermediate and advanced ability without a recognised credential.

HSK 3.0 is built on the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education and expands the scale into three bands and nine levels:

      • Elementary (Levels 1–3): basic communicative ability in everyday life
      • Intermediate (Levels 4–6): routine communication in study, work and daily situations
      • Advanced (Levels 7–9): professional, occupational and academic Chinese, including appropriateness in context

The new test assesses all four skills — listening, speaking, reading and writing — and adds translation at the advanced band. Learners who read well but speak poorly will now see that reflected honestly in their results. That is pressure, but it is also a more accurate picture.

      2. Two dates you must not miss

According to the announcement published by the test administrator, registration for the 13 December 2026 session closes at the following times (Beijing time):

      Test format Registration deadline
      Paper-based 16 November 2026, 24:00
      Internet-based 3 December 2026, 24:00

Registration is handled through the official Chinese Tests Service Website (www.chinesetest.cn), where you can look up test centres in your country before booking online.

Important: for Levels 3 to 6, the written test and the corresponding speaking test must be registered together. You cannot enter for the written paper alone.

Results for internet-based tests are released about 15 days after the test, and for paper-based tests about 30 days after, with delays around statutory holidays. Score reports are valid for two years.

      3. What this means for different groups

If you are applying to a Chinese university: HSK Level 4 remains the baseline language requirement for most undergraduate programmes, and that has not changed. But if you are targeting a master’s or doctoral programme, or need strong professional Chinese, the new Levels 7–9 finally give you a ladder to climb.

If you already work in China: the advanced certificates map much more closely onto real workplace language. The old gap between "reads and writes fine but cannot hold a conversation" was hard to demonstrate on a score report; now it shows up clearly in the speaking component.

If you teach Chinese: curricula need to be rebuilt. The "fast track to Level 4" model has to give way to balanced listening, speaking, reading and writing, plus genuine higher-order ability.

      4. Is there still time to prepare?

There are just under two months between now and 13 December. Three things are worth doing:

      • Take a diagnostic test first. Place yourself against the nine-level framework rather than relying on intuition from the old six-level system.
      • Fix your speaking. The speaking component is now compulsory at Levels 3–6, so it can no longer be deferred.
      • Work with real past papers. The two trial rounds have produced material you can practise on.

At Mandarin Edu, our HSK preparation syllabus has already been restructured around the new standards. If you plan to sit the test in Wuxi or Changzhou and want face-to-face preparation, contact us to book a free placement assessment. We will tell you which of the new levels you currently sit at, and exactly which gaps to close.
