一、普通话水平应该过关
所谓“过关”，是指按国家汉语国际推广领导小组办公室（简称“国家汉办”）《汉语作为外语教学能力认定》应该达到二级乙等以上。对外汉语教学所教授的是普通话，而不是方言，也不是带方言味儿的普通话。如果你要教普通话，无疑自身的普通话越标准越好，最好能达到一级乙等。达到了一级乙等或甲等，说明你的普通话在发音、词汇、语法、表达各个方面，基本就没有缺陷了。
二、具备相应的汉语知识
不是会说普通话的人都能从事对外汉语教学。汉语作为第二语言的教学对象主要是不以汉语为母语的人，受时间、条件、环境、母语、学习动机等的综合影响，他们在学习过程中一定会寻找语言规律，而不是像孩子学母语那样靠耳濡目染。所以汉语教师应该能够解释汉语的语音、词汇、语法的基本规律。例如，外国学生常常说“我昨天不来上课，不知道留的什么作业”。说汉语的人都知道，这句话中的“不”应该换成“没”。有的老师就解释说“过去的事情就用‘不’，以后的事情就用‘没’”。可是“我昨天不在家”和“我昨天没在家”都可以说，同样是昨天，为什么“不”和“没”又通用了呢？有的人解释不了，就说“这是汉语的习惯”，如果都是汉语的习惯，汉语不就毫无规律了吗？那学生还怎么学习？其实在汉语语法学上这个问题是有解释的。这时候如果有相应的语法知识，知道动词后面的“了”和用于句尾的“了”有什么差别，“过”表示什么动态意义，解释起来就轻松很多、科学很多。再如，学生发不好汉语拼音“ｒ”，有的老师就让他反复跟读，跟了半天还是学不会，老师就没有办法了。这就是缺少语音知识的缘故，其实一个简单的舌位图，再加上老师适当的解释和示范就可以解决。所以一个对外汉语教师，应该主动地去学习和掌握汉语知识。
三、掌握必要的中国文化知识和技能
语言和文化密不可分。学习汉语，也必然要接触到汉语文化，教师具备比较全面的中国文化知识非常必要。比如，有的人连中国朝代顺序都记不下来，就很容易犯错误。如果你能掌握某些文化技能，开展汉语教学就会如虎添翼。
四、具备良好的沟通能力和必要的外语能力
汉语教师要有亲和力，要有与人沟通的能力和技巧，否则很难想象你的汉语课堂会生动有趣。另外，必要的外语能力是需要的，至少应该能用当地语言进行基本沟通，或者借助英语进行基本沟通。海外留学生熟悉当地语言和文化，这是从事汉语教学的有利条件。
五、相关要求也不可少
爱岗敬业、教学方法、人格魅力等也是一个优秀的汉语教师必不可少的。
目前海外对外汉语教师的需求量很大，国家汉办除了每年派遣汉语教师、汉语志愿者外，也正在制定相关政策，在当地招募汉语志愿者。希望有志于从事对外汉语教学的人士提早准备，早日成为一名合格的对外汉语教师。
