庭园设计是日本自古以来的一种重要艺术形式。传统日本风景庭园大致可以分为三类：筑山亭、枯山水庭和茶庭。日本的庭院是在有限的土地内，建筑水池及假山，并配以树木以及其他点缀物，在简朴中表现自然风景、野外风情之美以及季节景观的变化。
筑山庭

筑山庭的大小不一，并且随观看的方式而变化。比较小的庭园通常只从一个观看点来欣赏，譬如寺庙的游廊，而许多大的庭园最好沿一条曲折宛然的道路来体验。
枯山水庭
枯山水庭又叫做无水庭院，顾名思义，它不用水，而是以一种更加抽象的方式，如通过石头、 碎石、沙子，有时甚至是青苔来重建自然风景在枯山水庭中，这些材质分别代表着山、岛、小船、海和河流。枯山水庭受禅宗佛教的强烈影响，常常被作为凝思之地，因而常见于禅宗寺庙的庭院。（无锡芥川新日语培训学校—无锡日语培训领军品牌）
“于无水处观水”这一象征性的手法与禅的精神是相通的。从室町时代到江户时代的初期多有建造。
茶庭
茶庭为茶道而修建。它的主体部分是举行实际茶道仪式的茶屋，是根据茶道的理念尊奉朴素的审美观念而设计建造的。但更能体现茶庭典型特色的是通向茶屋的石台阶、石灯笼和石池（石蹲踞），在参加仪式之前客人都要在石池上净化自己的身体。（无锡日语学习分享）
