东京的两国有一个新国技馆，建于1985年。其实把它叫做相扑馆，也当无妨。每年六次的相扑级别审定大赛中，年初赛（1月）、夏季赛（5月）和秋季赛（9月）等都在这里举行。其它的春季赛（3月）、名古屋赛（7月）和九州赛（11月）分别在大阪、名古屋和福冈举行。
如果有兴趣，去看看相扑表演的确不错。它是一种颇受青睐的日本国技，因此上等席票很快就会销售一空。不过，正所谓“百闻不如一见”，即使再靠后的座席，也比看电视更为尽兴吧。
相扑力士们登上摔跤场，进行表演。他们的身躯要比普通日本人宽大的多。据说，要成为一名力士，首先必须接受完义条教育，并达到身高173CM，体重75KG以上的标准。当然，只有好的体格还不能成为一名力士。他们必须坚持严格的训练，方可进入摔跤场。力士经常挽着发髻，登台时腰部围着鲜艳的饰裙。相扑不像摔跤和拳击那样有重量级别划分，因此有时会出现瘦小的力士与粗壮如山的力士同台较量的情况。每次比赛的赛期为15天，力士们每天要与不同的对手交战，并力争得到尽可能多的白点儿（胜利标志）。
按照传统习惯，在进入比赛之前，力士要两脚用力踏地，同时手里抓些盐撒在摔跤场上以洁身心。一级力士摆好架势等待交手的时限规定为4分钟。
力士站起来进入比赛后，只要除脚底以外的身体任何一部分着地，都算输。比赛的胜负由相扑裁判员根据力士的招数裁定。有时，比赛开始瞬间就胜负分晓，有时则双方势均力敌，相持不下达两分钟之久。
比赛一般由手持指挥扇的场上裁判员裁定。不过，摔跤场还有一个五人裁判委员会。当不服裁决时，由五人委员会进行协商。有时须借助录像裁定，也有时需重新比赛。
为便于那些住在乡下、无法观看大赛的人们，还举行巡回表演赛。不能观看巡回表演赛的人可以看电视。
最近，外国人中也出现了狂热的相扑迷。看来，在一个时期内相扑热还不会降温吧。
