无锡民间流传着“隆亭一夜改东亭”之说。相传隆亭（今无锡锡山区东亭镇）华太师用精致的“金砖”建造豪华的住宅。当时有人告他图谋不轨，私造龙廷。朝廷获悉后，派专人到无锡调查，华太师于是将隆亭改称东亭。
华太师确有其人，名察，字子潜，号鸿山。其世祖华原泉原籍河南，北宋末年南渡，迁居无锡之隆亭，以后成为无锡的望族。元、明间华氏先后迁到堠阳（今无锡新区坊前）和鹅湖（今无锡锡山区鹅湖镇荡口）。华察为嘉靖五年（1526）进士，选为庶吉士、后调户部主事，又迁兵部郎中。后任翰林院修撰，参与校录各朝实录。曾出使朝鲜。后任应天府会试主官，拜侍读学士。因拒绝奸相严嵩结纳，被告老还乡，又从荡口迁至隆亭。华察工诗，著有《岩居稿》、《翰宛留院集》、《皇华集》、《碧山堂集》、《知退轩集》、《东行纪兴》等。华察晚年迁居无锡甘露。
华察生前从荡口迁居隆亭，建造了一座豪华的住宅。据《锡山景物略》记载：“至今过其前，不敢仰视，侯门王府，叹壮丽不如也。东西两园，不山不水，能自山自水，极土木之胜，十步一阁，琼宫阆苑，意出人间。闻工役告竣，使者以册进，首一叶开载石灰一项，费四千金，即掩卷，余置不目，盖作法于奢，公自知之矣。”这座宏大壮丽的府第后代已毁，现尚存府第的大门，为三间四柱五楼的石坊，称为“华学士坊”。四柱高耸，上承楼座，东西两侧青石须弥座上为八字影壁，须弥座束腰上雕双狮戏球花纹。华学士坊南原有高大的照壁。府第北侧的金粟岭原建有别墅园林，至今都已湮没。从残存的华学士坊，可以相见昔日华察府第的宏伟壮观。
