成语 (chéngyǔ) Idiom “锦上添花jǐn shàng tiān huā” VS “雪中送炭xuě zhōng sòng tàn”
锦上jǐn shàng : on a brocade
添花tiān huā : add on flowers (ie. decorate with flowers)
雪中xuě zhōng : in snowy weather
送炭sòng tàn : send charcoal
锦上添花jǐn shàng tiān huā : (lit) add flowers on a brocade.
Meaning: do insinuating act to better the things that are already good.
雪中送炭xuě zhōng sòng tàn : (lit) in snowy weather send charcoal to the people in need of. Meaning: offer timely help that is needed most.
This proverb points out a common phenomenon in our societies, that many people are fond of fawning upon, but rarely seen them lending timely help to others who need most.
Example :
在当今社会，“锦上添花”的人比比皆是, 但“雪中送炭”的人屈指可数！
(zài dāng jīn shèhuì, “ jǐn shàng tiān huā” de rén bǐ bǐ jiē shì , dàn “xuě zhōng sòng tàn” de rén qū zhǐ kě shǔ)
In nowaday societies, people who only help make good things to better still are seen everywhere, but people who offer help that is needed most are rare.
比比皆是bǐ bǐ jiē shì : in existence everywhere.
屈指可数qū zhǐ kě shǔ : count on one’s fingers (ie. very few)
