Wuxi, a modern civilized city
The city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, which was designated a national civilized city in February, 2015, is striving to improve its civilization level continuously.
In 1980, Wuxi No.34 Middle School took the lead in development of campus civilization by asking students to practice good manners and etiquette, which laid the foundation for the nation's later civilization promotion activities.
After 35 years, Wuxi has achieved the title of national civilized city, the highest honor reflecting a city's comprehensive strength and core competitiveness. Yixing and Jiangyin, two administrative counties of Wuxi, were also nominated.
Wuxi has made great achievements in modern civilization growth in recent years, contributing to both its hard and soft power.
With the economy developing rapidly, commercial buildings sprang up and various social benefit projects were launched. The metro, the high-speed railway and the airport created a convenient traffic environment. The city also actively promoted environmental protection by controlling gas emissions and preserving cultivated lands, with its green coverage rate reaching 42.7 percent. The city established mature modern public service and educational systems, and excelled in food and medical security programs.
More than 600,000 volunteers, who represent the soft power of the city, have had a significant impact on the emergence of civilization. In recent years, the city developed various approaches to juvenile care involving volunteers. Such innovative modes as well as high-quality services have made Wuxi a national model city in this field.
"Every time I see people give up seats on the bus or put rubbish into the garbage can," said an old volunteer, "I am so happy because our efforts do contribute to civilized behavior."
To date, the city has a total of 656,000 registered volunteers, four of whom have been honored as national moral models.
Wuxi, a modern civilized city
"Wuxi's pace of building a modern civilized city will never lessen," said a government official, adding, "We will continue launching public benefit projects and improving our service quality in the future."
