      Sugar-coated Haws, or Bing Tang Hu Lu in Chinese, is a popular traditional snack of Beijing. It is made by first putting cleaned haws (usually five) on a prod, then dip it into syrup stewed by crystal sugar and water, and finally taken out and dried. The bright, lovely haws on the prod look like a string of small red lanterns, with a sweet and sour taste. The outer layer of sugar is crisp, but the haws are soft. Although traditionally this snack only uses haws, nowadays they also have sugar-coated yam, chufa, grape, orange, and walnut kernel. But Sugar-coated Haws is the most authentic, and helps digestion while rich in Vitamin C and E.
