习惯与自然

一根小小的柱子，一截细细的链子，拴得住一头千斤重的大象，这不荒谬吗？可这荒谬的场景在印度和秦国随处可见。那些驯象人，在大象还是小象的时候，就用一条铁链将它绑在水泥柱或钢柱上，无论小象怎么挣扎都无法挣脱。小象渐渐地习惯了不挣扎，直到长成了大象，可以轻而易举地挣脱链子时，也不挣扎。

驯虎人本来也像驯象人一样成功，他让小虎从小吃素，直到小虎长大。老虎不知肉味，自然不会伤人。驯虎人的致命错误在于他摔了跤之后让老虎舔净他流在地上的血，老虎一舔不可收，终于将驯虎人吃了。

小象是被链子绑住，而大象则是被习惯绑住。

曾经被习惯绑住，而驯虎人则死于习惯（他已经习惯于他的老虎不吃人）。

习惯几乎可以绑住一切，只是不能绑住偶然。比如那只偶然尝了鲜血的老虎。

습관과 자연

아주 작은 기둥 하나, 작은 사슬 하나, 천근짜리 코끼리 한 마리를 제압할 수 있다는 것은 터무니없는 말인가요?그러나 이 터무니없는 광경은 인도와 진나라 곳곳에서 볼 수 있다.그 길들인 사람들은 코끼리가 작은 코끼리일 때 시멘트 기둥이나 강철 기둥에 쇠사슬로 묶어 놓아서 작은 코끼리가 아무리 발버둥쳐도 헤어나지 못한다.아기 코끼리는 점점 버둥거리지 않고 자라서 쉽게 사슬에서 벗어날 수 있을 때까지 발버둥치지 않는 버릇이 생긴다.

훈호인들도 원래 훈상인들처럼 성공하는데, 그는 아기 호랑이들이 새끼 호랑이들이 자랄 때까지 새끼 호랑이들에게 야채를 먹도록 한다.호랑이가 고기 맛을 모르면 자연히 사람을 다치게 하지 않는다.호랑이를 길들이는 사람의 치명적인 실수는 그가 넘어져서 호랑이가 땅에 흘린 피를 깨끗이 핥게 하고 호랑이가 한 번 핥아먹으면 결국 호랑이를 길들이는 사람을 잡아먹는 것이다.

Habit and nature
